Situation:

An elevator door fabrication contractor was about to lose their elevator door manufacturing contract as they were not able to find a bonding solution that would keep the honeycomb in place even after being subjected to the heat of the powdered paint process.

Substrates: Mild Steel || Cardboard

Challenges:

  • They were currently using a water-based adhesive that - Failed from the 20-minute, 180oC. powder coating oven curing process
  • Failed to meet NVH standards for noise, vibration, and harsh acoustics

Solution:

The manufacturer met a Henkel solutions expert and tested MACROPLAST UK 8103 / 5400 polyurethane structural bonder. The adhesive was mixed and applied to the metal door panels and the honeycomb was positioned for the door assembly.

Results:

Bonding with Macroplast UK 8103/5400:

  • Allowed the manufactured doors to withstand the 180oC paint curing cycle without charring or burning
  • Made the door compliant with NVH standards
  • Lowered overall production expenses by 40% over previous method The manufacturer kept the door fabrication contract and successfully delivered on the same.
  • Withstands 180oC paint curing cycle
