Situation:

An elevator manufacturer was searching for better alternatives to double sided tapes for attaching stiffeners to elevator car panels.

Challenges:

While attaching stiffeners to car panels using double sided tape, the manufacturer observed that:

  • Tape bond strengths degrade during equipment operation allowing stiffeners to slip
  • High material and labor costs were needed for double sided tape applications
  • Parts are difficult to adjust once the tape had made contact with the opposite surface

Solution:

Post an initial consultation with Henkel solutions experts, the manufacturer tested Teroson MS 9360 modified silane based structural adhesive for stiffener bonding. Metal surfaces were cleaned and Teroson MS 9360 is dispensed using a pneumatic cartridge dispenser. Post this the stiffener is pressed into the adhesive bead and clamed for 40 mins.

During testing it was found the stiffeners bonded with Teroson MS 9360 stayed in place.

Results:

Bonding with Teroson MS 9360:Significantly reduced assembly materials costs versus double sides tapes

  • Reduced the number of application steps and allowed for easier stiffener re-positioning
  • Kept stiffeners in place despite heat aging during elevator operation
